By two Vietnamese adoptees, Bert Ballard & Jessica Emmett.
Welcome to Adopted the Comic. This short project ran from 2009-2013 and has now come to an end as Bert & Jess turn towards other projects. By popular demand, the website and Facebook page will be left up as a resource and platform for comments, but it will have very minimal activity from us. Comics can still be linked or used (more info HERE). Bert & Jess would like to thank everyone for the amazing support they had throughout the project. See our final post HERE. Jess continues to do adoption comics now and then on her new comic Stray Thoughts Comics HERE.

Excuse me, why are you mocking the people, who actually do have sad stories due to adoption? Self-irony is a grand necessity in life, and I do think it’s very appropriate to reflect upon your situation as adoptees with a sense of humour and without selfpitying gravity – but, please, being adopted and the issues in relation to this is not insignifant to everyone…
Here at adopted the comic we always welcome comments good or bad.
I wanted to replay to your comment, cos i do see where you are coming from. First, me and Bert thinking very deeply and take adoption very seriously which i feel is reflected in the adoption works, research, writings, art works etc that we do professionally (away from this comic). We have a full understanding and appreciate that actually adoptees, adoptive parents & birth families all have genuine and at times sad & difficalt experiences/stories. The reason we started this comic is cos we felt there were many many resources that deal with the serious aspects of adoption, but very few that was on the lighter side.
Of course me and bert think that sharing adoption stories is an important and healing process for some adoptees and to help the adoption comminties rather than commenting on adoption and their stories being insignificant. Both me and Bert have given many talks about your adoption experiences on a stage. Please note that this was a very early comic, we have tried to develop both the humour and art styles since then (as this was new to both me and bert), and admittedly some “miss” but we hope that most have “hit” =).
I have a great respect for anyone that comments on this comic that may not be complementary, and i thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and sorry to hear that the comic has made you feel this way. However any comments of this nature always gives me (and bert) a pause for thought.
I hope that others may feel they can add to this open discussion.
